GORDONIAN R.F.C.

A quick word with our Senior Director of Rugby Bevis Reid

6 Nov 2024

After successfully navigating our cup group fixtures and sitting pretty at the top of both leagues, we thought it was a good time to catch a word with the ever busy Bevis Reid who takes on the role of Senior Director of Rugby at Gordonian RFC. See what Bevis has to say below.

What are your thoughts on the initial league performance of both the 1st XV and 2nd XV?

Looking at the league standings for both teams at this stage, it’s hard to not be happy with where we are at as a club. I think the most impressive aspect for me has been the attitude across the board, the guys are never fully satisfied with the performances and always striving for better. We believe there is much more to come from both teams, so we will continue to pursue that. The focus is very much on the performance and the results will hopefully follow that.

What noticeable improvements have you seen between this season and last season?

The biggest improvement has been our ability to see out games. Last season, across both teams, when things weren’t going our way we found it very hard to turn the tide and get the results. This season we have been able to compose ourselves in those difficult periods of games and see them out and come away with the win at the end. We are hopeful that fighting streak will continue for both teams.

How have the club been supporting players off the training pitch to achieve the seasons goals?

At the club we pride ourselves on supporting any player in any scenario they might face. So whether that is rugby based or outside rugby. It is very much a community, and with everyone pulling together in the same direction we are looking to achieve big things.

Rugby wise the players get the use of great facilities at Countesswells, and as we move into Winter we train at Aberdeen Sports Village as well. Very grateful for the physio support that the Wallace practice provide us. Strength and Conditioning wise, we support the players through specific programmes as required.

We also look to give back and support the wider rugby community. One way we achieve that is by our coaches supporting the rugby clubs at both Aberdeen University and Robert Gordon University

What you’re most looking forward to over the upcoming matches?

Looking forward to the 2nd XV hopefully gathering momentum again and putting more points on the board. The 2nd XV being promoted to Caledonian 1 is a major goal for the club.

For the 1st XV, it’s a cliched response, but genuinely just looking forward to them continuing to improve. There is a lot more to come from the team, and everyone at the club is excited to see what that looks like.

Most enjoyable fixture so far?

Probably the away victory down in Newton Stewart. To come away with the win, considering the position we found ourselves in at halftime, it really set the tone for the games head and kick started our season. It’s also a thoroughly enjoyable bus trip, especially after a win.

Cheers Bev!
